FDA evaluates a 'safer' version of OxyContin

The government is evaluating a new version of OxyContin — the potent painkiller sometimes called «hillbilly heroin» — designed to be harder to abuse.

Why does the press always say "heroin like high". The active ingredient of Oxycontin is interchangeable with heroin. The two molecules look almost similar. When is the press going to understand the hoax. Heroin was originally marketed as a cough medicine. Oxycontin for pain. Same side effects.....What's going on?

If I remember by pharmacology correctly heroin is has a far easier time than any other opiate in crossing the blood brain barrier. Once it gets into the brain it is rapidly converted to morphine. It is the ability of heroin to get into the central nervous system and produce such an intense euphoria that makes it so different from other opiates and what makes it so dangerous.

Pain Clinics Do you know what is happening in our State of Florida? Pain Clinics are opening up on every street corner. Have you noticed? Take a moment and observe. Very few of these Pain Clinics are legitimate medical offices. In actuality they are legal drug dealers. How can we allow this to happen in our state? Many states have adopted a Prescription Drug Database to better “control”“controlled substances”. But not Florida we are behind even though there is a bill (Senate Bill 1550) on the floor that has failed several times. On my way to lunch this afternoon, I passed the very clinic that prescribed my drug addicted son a lethal mix and enormous quantity of OxyContin and Xanax last week. Outside of that very clinic there were at least 6 young men, hanging out around the building. What legitimate doctor’s office have you been to that has so many people hanging around? They are addicts just waiting to get their addiction fed by an unethical medical doctor. These unethical doctors went through a rigorous education, to do what? Get people addicted to drugs? I don’t understand how we can let this happen. Do you know what OxyContin is? OxyContin is an opioid agonist and a Schedule II controlled substance with an abuse liability similar to morphine or heroin.Physicians are dispensing this highly additive drug like it is aspirin with no regard for the health of the patients they prescribe it to. OxyContin TABLETS ARE TO BE SWALLOWED WHOLE AND ARE NOT TO BE BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED. TAKING BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED OxyContin TABLETS LEADS TO RAPID RELEASE AND ABSORPTION OF A POTENTIALLY FATAL DOSE OF OXYCODONE.Do you think that drug addicts read the fine print? No they do not. Once they are addicted they only want more and more until they overdose and die.You can write do something. You can write your Senator, Representative or Congressperson at www.flsenate.gov/Legislators .Plead with them to vote for this bill and to stop legalized drug dealers.Sincerely,Tina Reed

If you want to abuse anything it should be your right to do so as long as your not out driving around getting effed up and killing people, i enjoy oxy's as well as percocet, it makes for a nice smooth buzz, and helps to take away the ache's of aging, unfortunately your government sees the need to treat you like a child when it comes to meds, making it necessary to get the stuff from the black market paying top dollar for cheap things, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Why is the FDA protecting the abusers of this drug? Do we make beer cans harder to open in order to save people from alcoholism? What we need are stiffer laws against drug abuse, misuse, and over-prescribing.

If they do anything different with the ingredients of this drug they may as well change the name of it too.

Uh, the FDA has their priorities on the wrong drug. The massive use of Roxicodone 30MG (oxycodone) which is a full release tablet and can be crushed is the tablet they should be concerned with.

I am surprised more people with no idea about chronic pain have not written about the abuses of pain meds. What a refreshing change with some knowledgeable people responding.Guess it's nap time

I respectfully disagree with your oxycodone 30mg ban. they should stick to food.

What drug are the addicts going to take next? With oxycodone off the market, the cheap pharmacies will close down and all of the people who come here from Arkansas and Massachusetts to get their pills will no longer get their high here. Drug tourism will suffer! By the way, lock those losers up while we can.
